Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD)

Navigating the Realm of Genito-Urinary Medicine (GUM) and Understanding Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD)

What You Need To Know

Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs), or also known as Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs), is an umbrella of Genito-Urinary Medicine. These are infections transmitted through sexual contact with someone who has an STD.
These diseases can be caused by bacteria, viruses, parasites or protozoa and can affect individuals of all ages, gender and backgrounds. Symptoms can range from mild to severe and in some cases, remain unnoticed, making the exposure and transmission even more prevalent.
It’s of paramount importance that sexual health education, regular screenings and safe sex practices are promoted to prevent the spread of these diseases. Understanding STD’s is not only crucial for the sake of personal health, but also in the interest of public health at large.
